Okay so this one is a mystery. A letter arrives from Jay in Hawaii who we know is very close to Pearl Harbor. There is no letter in the envelope. You can see the censor strip on the envelope. Was the letter removed? Was it lost? We will probably never know…

Book 1 – Letter 44 Received October 5, 1942 from Jay
A letter finally arrives from Hawaii. It seems that working for the war effort takes priority over going to school.

The next letter from Jay arrives. It took about 6 weeks to arrive from Hawaii to Ohio. The envelope was examined by censor 2675.

The next letter finally arrives February 9th from Jay. As you can see it was post marked January 15th and shows the censor marking “Released by I.C.B. 129” This was the Information Control Branch, an American agency.
Jay makes reference to she and her sisters not being able to go to school after the attack on Pearl Harbor. There is no doubt that this tragedy affected everyone.
Next letter will arrive March 18th from a new pal.

Book 1 – Letter 1 Received December 15, 1941 from “Jay”
Jay writes from Honolulu Hawaii and the letter is postmarked December 4th, 1941. Just 3 days later on the morning of December 7 the Japanese attacks Pearl Harbor. The attack led to the United States’ entry into World War II. The next letter from Hawaii does not arrive until February 9th, 1942.
